I have two left feet. I have always had two left feet. I have, in the past, considered having it printed on my business cards, right below my job title. It was such an intricate part of my self-image that I laughed out loud when my friends suggested we all take up salsa lessons.
But my salsa dance lesson in Manchester catered for people like me. On the Salsology website, it specifically welcomes people with two left feet like mine, and off we went. I was out of excuses!
I have never been so glad, I can tell you. My salsa dance lesson in Manchester was an eye-opener. I told the instructor I was worried about my ability to keep up, and I got some personal attention as a result, but it wasn’t really necessary.
We started small, with simple to-and-fro steps, and slowly built on that. I focussed on the music; its recognisable beat was very easy to keep hold of, and before you could say ‘two left feet’ I was off and dancing with the confidence and the ability of someone who knew what they were doing – certainly nothing like the me I was used to!
I see myself in a new light now, since my salsa lesson in Manchester. I think that maybe, it’s easy to see yourself as the person you were years before. But if I can dance the salsa, then perhaps I am not the clumsy person I’d always assumed I was. Maybe I could try something new, too!
But I will keep it up with my salsa lessons for now, because I am determined to master it and wow those same friends who showed their faith in me by inviting me along.
